I was in your shoes a few years ago. My husband, 6 week old daughter and I moved from our apartment to a 100+ year old square house.
Moving To New Home Checklist
And it was one of the proudest days of my life. Almost 15 years of saving money to save up a 20% down payment for my first home while living in run-down apartments.
Staging My Home To Sell & Moving Checklist
I was busy loading, unpacking and starting a new life (after we rested the first night). But the house must be cleaned. The last owners were nice people, but focused on their new home, not cleaning the house they passed on to us.
My advice? Before you unpack (or move), take the time to give your new place a good scrub and deep clean. This deep cleaning will (literally) wipe the surface. Don’t you and your new home deserve a fresh start?
Not sure where to start? Feeling overwhelmed? I felt the same way. But if you know me, you know I’m a list girl. I always make lists. Grocery lists. Christmas gift list. List of Liabilities. List of containers. Having a checklist gives me a sense of control.
So when it came time to deep clean our new home I developed a move-in cleaning checklist. And I pass it on to you.
What To Do After You Move
Use this checklist as a tool to systematically remove dirt and grime accumulated from previous owners. Make your new old home shine again!
I admit my checklist is not very complicated. This is a normal document (actually a word document). No fancy pictures. No noticeable color.
What do you really want? A simple yet comprehensive checklist that applies to all your accommodations. If I forgot something, this checklist has blank spaces so you can customize it to your specific needs.

I hate Fugue. It’s so hard to keep it white! There is a good chance that your new “old” shower or tub will not have clean tiles and grout.

So how do you clean it? Check out Brene Dido’s test of the 10 most popular DIY grout cleaners on the Internet to find out which combination of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda cleans grout the best. Tubs and showers come in a variety of materials, each with different recommended cleaning methods. Once you know the composition of the bathtub, you can determine the best way to clean it.

Only some bathtubs have shower stalls and doors, so this task in this move-in cleaning checklist may not apply. But the marks on the shower door are too easy to ignore, so I deliberately called it a cleaning task. Merry Maids recommends 2 different ways to easily remove all the dirt from these songs.

This job might be my favorite on this move-in list. Maybe yours too. Domestic goddess Martha Stewart gets down to the nitty-gritty of cleaning inside and out and removing stubborn stains and rings in her definitive guide to cleaning a toilet.
Some sit on the toilet seat used by the previous owner and buy a new seat. Honestly, I can’t blame them. Personally, the toilets in our house weren’t that old so I was fine with keeping our seats after a good cleaning.
Sinks can stain quickly from water droplets and soap residue. This can add up for low-maintenance homeowners, especially those with hard water. Wipe the sink with a damp sponge or cloth. Sarah from Bitz & Giggles recommends an easy DIY solution for hard water stains using vinegar.
Bathroom cabinets are dust and dirt magnets (think squashed toothpaste tubes). For this move-in checklist task, vacuum up any dirt and wipe it with a damp cloth, then dry it with a clean cloth.

Faucets for sinks, towel rails, and other bathroom components start out shiny and beautiful, but they quickly become dull with constant use. It’s hard to keep them shiny – constantly washing your hands with your family, splashing soap and leaving behind water stains.
Hardware comes in a variety of metals – brass, chrome, stainless steel, chrome, so I hesitate to give specific cleaning instructions for fear of damage. But Southern California-based Modern Bathroom has several tips on how to polish your bathroom fixtures.
The first kitchen cleaning task on this move-in cleaning checklist is cleaning behind all moving appliances. These are usually a refrigerator and a stove. Of course, this assumes that the previous owners left you these devices. But although they took their tools with them, they probably left some clean space.
Printable, All Inclusive Moving Checklist
Why is deep cleaning behind the refrigerator important? Not only is it often an unsanitary area, but it can also cost you money. Dust build-up on the cooling coils can cause inefficient operation of the device (ie, higher utility bills).
The Apartment Guide gives step-by-step instructions on exactly how to locate and clean fridge coils, while Marian from Miss Mustard Seed gives a quick rundown on how she cleans behind her stove.

Kitchen appliances inevitably accumulate grease and grime after years of cooking. Here are 5 different expert recommended ways to clean your wood kitchen cabinets. Once you’ve finished cleaning the outside of your cabinets, it’s time to move inside. Vacuum up dust, crumbs, and any other spills (using a soft dusting brush attachment) and then mop using the same method used to wash the cabinet exterior. To ensure that the interior is sufficiently dry, leave the cabinet door open for a while and wipe away any remaining moisture with another dry, soft cloth.
After vacuuming and cleaning the inside of the wardrobe, decide whether to line the shelves and drawers. The pads prevent freshly washed dishes from warping the shelf (come on, we all do it!) but this step is optional. To be honest, I only put pots and pans under the sink and shelf. I know I should line all my shelves, but I don’t.
If the previous homeowner didn’t follow their garbage disposal, your kitchen sink may have a musty odor. Hanker Gavesideas was how to keep your garbage disposal clean, fresh and sterile. Not only will the citrus in lemons help dislodge dirt-clogging particles, but it will also leave your sink and drain smelling lemony.
