Note that liquid volumes in the US are not the same as in the UK, and many measurements (such as a pint) are different depending on the country you are in.

It’s easy to get confused when it comes to US and UK fluid units. The only good thing is that metric units NEVER change!

The terms “pint” and “gallon” can mean different amounts of liquid depending on the country you are in.

These differences can cause many problems when comparing quantities or prices per gallon in different countries.

Metric units also work with the decimal number system, where each conversion factor is a power of 10.

The charts below will help you convert between a number of metric measurements, from lengths to areas to volumes and weights.

## Cooking Conversion Charts (us/metric)

If you are a regular user of our site and appreciate what we do, please consider making a small donation to help with our costs. The metric system was introduced in France in 1790. This historical evolution later culminated in the invention of the international system of units (SI units). This is known as “Metrication”. The different units of measurement led to the introduction of the “Metric System”.

Metric conversions are part of our daily lives, from cooking to baking. See the metric conversion charts and tables in this lesson to get a better idea of how you can perform metric conversions.

From the amount of sugar you add to a cake to the size of any area, everything around us has a measurement value. We measure each object by its length, weight, volume or time. While the distance of a road can be measured in miles, we cannot do the same for the amount of water in a can. We use gallons to find the volume of water and feet to find the height of the container.

Metric conversion refers to the conversion of given units to desired units for any quantity to be measured. The different units of measurement resulted in the introduction of the “Metric System”. The metric units followed in the United States are called United States Customary Units (USCS).

In mathematics, the metric system of measurement is a set of standard units defined for measuring length, weight, and capacity. The units of the metric system, originally derived from observable properties of nature, are defined by seven physical constants with numerical values based on the units. The metric system evolved and over time became universally accepted as the International System of Units called the SI System, and many countries follow this system.

The USCS system evolved from the British Imperial system. US metric units are also called “imperial units”. The main difference between SI units and American metric units is the terms and type of units used. For example, while a foot is used in US metric units, a length is measured using a meter in SI units.

Teaching metric conversions requires translating a mathematical idea from one form to another. Examples can be taken in real-time, for example comparing and converting a given measurement within the same measurement system. Metric conversion charts might be a good idea.

Metric conversion charts give us conversion factors from standard to metric or vice versa and serve as a reference for quick and easy calculations. Let’s look at the metric conversion chart tables below:

The Length/Distance Conversion Chart provides a simple and easy way to convert basic units of length. A mile is the largest unit of measurement and an inch is the smallest unit of length. Let’s look at the graph below:

According to standard units, length is measured in meters. The unit is designated by the alphabet (m).

An area conversion chart provides conversion of base units related to area. Area is the space occupied by a two-dimensional shape or figure. Area is measured in square units. Let’s look at the graph below:

A volume conversion chart gives basic unit conversions related to volume. The term capacity or volume is used to measure the space occupied by an object. A volume is the space enclosed or occupied by any three-dimensional object or solid shape. It is long, wide and tall. It is measured in cubic units. Finding the volume of an object can help us determine the amount needed to fill that object. For example, the amount of water in a bottle. Let’s look at the graph below:

### Measurement Conversion Charts

Note that an ounce is a measure of mass and a fluid ounce is a measure of volume. One fluid ounce is the size of a medicine bottle. Other units such as peck (1 peck = 2 gal), barrel (31.5 gal) are rarely used.

The weight conversion table gives the basic unit conversions related to weight. A unit of weight is used to measure the mass of an object. It tells us how heavy and how light an object is. Base units can be multiplied and divided to measure smaller and larger units.

Printable Metric Conversion Charts are very useful as a useful reference for real-life purposes for assessment as well as solving metric conversion problems by students.

The English system is based on the total lengths of body parts, while the metric system is based on tools and units of measurement.

### Conversion Between Metric Units (video)

The metric system includes units of measurement such as meters and grams. The imperial system is used where things are measured in feet, inches, and pounds.
